Lesson II: Addiction
Amelia’s hands were shaking so badly that she spilled drops of water on the dress that had taken her weeks to find. She had been given the offending bottle of water, by her matron of honor, for the specific task of calming her nerves. She knew there was such a thing as stress and anxiety on any given wedding day, but this was ridiculous.
Tightly clutching the bottle—in hopes of stopping the tremors—Amelia wished it was a tall glass of anything strong and alcoholic. The bland liquid just wasn’t cutting it. She wished Macy was there. The moment Cole entered the dressing area, her cowardly best friend shoved the plastic container at her, and scurried off, as if she was hurrying to put out a fire.
She should have stayed here to help me put out this fire, Amelia thought.
“What the hell are you talking about? What the hell do you mean you can’t marry me?” Cole Porter stared at his bride-to-be in disbelief. Moments before he was to wait for her at the front of the church, she summons him to her dressing room to drop this little bomb.
Amelia closed her eyes, releasing a breath that she hoped would magically calm her. She heard Cole speak, but his voice seemed many miles away. Her mind had left the present, drifting back to what started this whole mess. She thought they had gotten past the obstacles that had plagued them from the beginning: his postponement of the original wedding and her feelings for another man. But she discovered, at the eleventh hour, they hadn’t gotten over the worst of their issues.
Amelia asked Cole to her dressing room to break the news. She would not be marrying him today or any day. He had to know why she couldn’t, or rather wouldn’t marry him. He had to understand!
